I met Michael Biehn once. It was about ten years ago. There he was, right in front of me, the star of so many of my favourite childhood movies. The Terminator! Aliens!! The Abyss!!! I tried to shake his hand, but he didn't reach out his hand in response. Instead he just left me hanging and stared at me. I had never experienced this before, so I froze. You could hear a pin drop. My mind was racing: "Quick! Think of something nice to say! Quick think of something nice to say!" and then it hit me, "duh, I'll tell him the truth, that he is one of my favourite actors!" But as I opened my mouth, the following line…

amateurish and not a horror film, but it's somehow got some kinda charm to it that kept me watching. it's a combination of the commited, impovis-y type acting, the bright and sunny daylight setting, which is kinda odd for a film like this, and just the overall confidence behind the camera that's holding it all together. it's also pretty well shot, actually, with the odd lil extra stuff (changing lenses/angles) to spice things up.
refreshing to see 2 hispanic girls leading! even when they're mainly there to just be attacked and used by every man they come across. good ending tho 🤷🏻♀️ im not mad it.
EDIT:so this is actually a remake of the chilean 2012 film by the same director, which i accidentially logged instead of this. guess i'll be checking out the original too.

This sweaty Texan thriller is an English language remake of the director's own 2012 Chilean film, which I haven't seen. On the basis of this version, I'm in no great rush to. Opening to the screams of two young women who are kept as slaves by their horrifically nasty dad, there's an immediate touch of Martyrs about it, and if you're a fan of that kind of thing then you might get more out of this misleadingly-titled movie than I did.
For our heroines, sisters curiously named Ana & Anny, go through a lot of shit at the hands (and more often, the dicks) of abusive men, and escaping from their dad only throws them into worse experiences, giving the premise…

qualitatively it's comparable to the Wrong Turn sequels - bad acting and sadistic hillbillies. At least the lead was pretty solid?

Do-overs generally struggle to avoid seeming superfluous - the worst example likely being John Badham's version of Nikita, which I've always referred to as Remake of No Point. But if there's someone else at the helm, they can sometimes bring a fresh eye to proceedings and develop the same material differently. If you're going back to the same well yourself, what more can you really do? However, in this case, transplanting the film to Texas may help. For it gives the remake a scummy, white trash setting, with which we are likely more familiar than its South American counterpart.
