Synopsis

HORROR UPON HORROR in the HOUSE OF DRACULA

A scientist working on cures for rare afflictions, such as a bone softening agent made from molds to allow him to correct the spinal deformity of his nurse, finds the physical causes of lycanthropy in wolf-man Larry Talbot and of vampirism in Count Dracula, but himself becomes afflicted with homicidal madness while exchanging blood with Dracula.

like pouring leftover monster cereals (inc. a depressive, wheelchair-bound fruit brute) in a bowl & mixin em up for breakfast like ok, maybe its 6 mos after halloween & its a lil stale, maybe franky is "barely a cameo" and "looks more like herman munster" but gaunt, borzoi-skulled carradine is my fav longboy drac (sorry hammer/lee)

House of Dracula is a fun monster mashup that surprisingly isn't only alive to serve the purpose of spectacle involving all of the creatures. There is a through-line in the film involving Dr. Edelmann as he slowly transforms into the very thing he's trying to end. His descent into monster chaos carnage is so much fun to watch and they transform him into a scary killer. He is on the verge of finding a cure for all of these monster making causes, but he executes a blood transfusion with Dracula unknowingly making himself the count. Lon Chaney Jr. gets to play around again as the Wolf Man and he gets another sweet transformation scene. It's a B movie and it…

Feels like another early draft of Van Helsing (2004). Pretty much on the same level as the previous Dracula movie, not as good as the second one and nowhere as good as the first one. It's just not the same without Bela Lugosi. All in all I'd say it's still DCEU > MCU

4th Erle C. Kenton (after The Island of Lost Souls, The Ghost of Frankenstein and House of Frankenstein)

18/52 of Podcast Macabre- A Universe of Horror

Why do I love this film? Because it lets its disabled characters speak about themselves. It lets them talk about their fears, their dreams, their desire for a brighter future. The monstrous are painfully aware of their difference and the damage it has caused. People have died because of their actions. There are real damages at stake and they can’t apologise to those they’ve hurt. All they can think about is cure, an attempt to remove any sign of affliction, so they can go on living without their guilt. Even Dracula wants this, much…

Dracula seeks out a brilliant geneticist in hopes of finding a cure for his condition, followed in short order by the Wolfman in search of the same. A while later Frankenstein's monster shows up under a pile of sand for very little conceivable reason. Everybody does a little bit of monstering and a whole lot of moping.

For all of its poky pacing and semi-coherent storytelling, this works best if viewed as a metaphor for its leads' relationship with monster movies. Chaney and Carradine both play aging men of dignity, eager to escape the infamous roles that made them special. Onslow Stevens's doctor-turned-monster does most of the heavy lifting, but Carradine gets one nicely menacing seduction scene set to "Für…

“You wanted to die, but instead you will live, because God in his divine workings has led you to the very thing which makes help possible."

For the longest time, I put off watching House of Dracula, despite it being my absolute favorite of The Wolf Man sequels and my personal pick for the most underrated of the classic black & white Universal Monster library. The reason for that is simple; this is the installment where Larry Talbot is cured of his monsterhood.

I've related strongly to the Larry Talbot character in both his highs and his lows, a man who's deeply hurt and scarred innocent people in his life and put those he loved in terrible danger, all the while…

The Universal Monster movies are really running out of gas at this point, House of Dracula being 64 minutes of familiar tropes and bland storytelling. There are just no more thrills or surprises to be had, so it’s no wonder the series after this lackluster installment quickly started winding down.

“I will explain everything before sunrise.”

I approach films looking for entertainment or art. If both are present, I’m pleased. If I learn something, that’s a bonus. What I learn from House of Dracula is that being a vampire, werewolf, or mad scientist is not as much fun as one might think.

Count Dracula (John Carradine) comes to the cliffside castle of Dr. Franz Edelmann (Onslow Stevens) looking for a cure—or so he says. In my experience, vampires aren’t all that trustworthy. In fact, most characters played by Carradine aren’t that trustworthy either. Then there’s that cliffside castle. What kind of physician/scientist lives in such? Again in my experience, such digs, whether in horror films or melodramas, are always signals…

Classic Monsters List

The penultimate "Monster Rally" produced by Universal as they departed from "shockers" in the wake of the end of World War II.

I have been following the journey of tragic Lawrence Talbot (Lon Chaney) through his five films. In this outing, highly unlikely events have pitched Talbot back in with the Frankenstein Monster and Dracula.

Though Talbot was mercy-slain by a silver bullet at the hands of gypsy girl Ilonka in the last movie, he has somehow survived (without explanation) and shows up at the saintly Dr. Edelmann's (Onslow Stevens) castle for help. Edelmann is the real deal, the noblest of all of Universal's "mad doctors". His fate thus becomes the epitome of "No good deed…

“To bring him back again would unleash worse than murder upon humanity.”

Nina the hunchback nurse was by far my favourite character.

“Have you ever heard of the pentagram?”

Foresake the Cross

Earl C. Kenton returns to the house in the final “serious” entry in the classic Universal Monsters saga, featuring rotating cast members, ever changing character motivations, but the always reliable dismissal, and willful ignorance of, The Mummy. Poor, dusty sod. It's a simultaneously silly and melancholy film as all the other, important monsters come knocking on Dr. Franz Edelmann’s door looking for a cure: blood-sick Dracula with a medical "problem"; suicidal Wolf-Man at wits' end.

Is it just me or does Lon Chaney look scary-thin here? He appears to be on the first notch of his belt (maybe too much of the sauce taking its toll). Anyway, the well-intentioned doc,…
